From Spiegel Online In a new documentary film, director Florin Iepan confronts Romania’s leaders over their ongoing silence about the country’s role in the Holocaust. But in a place where war criminals are still lauded as national heroes, his aim of getting them to acknowledge the past remains a daunting task. “Hello, Mr. President,” filmmaker Florin Iepan shouts. “I would like to introduce you to somebody.” The man he is speaking to is Romania’s former President Emil Constantinescu, who was in office from 1996 to 2000. He’s wearing an elegant white suit and leaving a conference room. “I know what more »

Antisemitism Alive And Well In Romania

Romania

From the Gatestone Institute The virus of antisemitism is alive and well in Eastern Europe, and so is the denial of the Holocaust. It is particularly disconcerting that a younger generation in Romania, and more than likely everywhere else in the world, should be infected with this virus, and is — or claims to be — ignorant of the real treatment of Jews in the 20th century. Dan Sova, a 39 year old Romanian lawyer and Social Democrat, who has been a Senator in the Parliament since 2008, was promoted to the position of Minister for Parliamentary Relations by the more »

Romania’s Top Dictionary Dumps Un-PC Terms

Marian Chiriac The Romanian Academy, the country’s premier academic establishment and linguistic watchdog, has changed some terms in its newly published dictionary after civic groups called them discriminatory. The main words at centre of the row are “jidan”, a pejorative term for Jew, and “tigan”, a common term for Roma/Gypsy people. The first one is now “not recommended for use”, while “tigan” is now described “as a pejorative term for a person with bad habits” instead of “term for an uncivilized and unmannered person”. Furthermore, “homosexuality” is no longer defined as a “sexual perversion”. “The definitions have been reworded so more »

Ghosts Of Home Recovers Prewar Jewish Life

ghosts

From the Canadian Jewish News It is a rare scholarly work that appeals to both specialist and generalist audiences, but this is true of Ghosts of Home: The Afterlife of Czernowitz in Jewish Memory, co-written by Marianne Hirsch and Leo Spitzer (University of California Press). Hirsch is a major figure in American academia – and the dominant voice in this collaboration – whose signal contribution to Jewish studies is the notion of “postmemory,” which she explores in light of her own experiences growing up under the influence of European-born parents. Her identity, she explains, was overshadowed by their “stories, images, more »

Romania and the Holocaust: ‘It Couldn’t Happen Here’

Romania

From The Economist DAN ŞOVA, a spokesman for Romania’s opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD), is paying the price for his poor grasp of history. On March 5th, discussing the Holocaust live on television, he said: “On the territory of Romania, no Jew suffered”. He added that “24 Jews died” as a result of the notorious government-backed Iasi pogrom of 1941. Most historians put the figure at 12,000 or more. It didn’t take long for Mr Şova to feel the consequences. The PSD distanced itself from his comments, removed him from his post and dispatched him to the Holocaust Memorial Museum more »
